Greetings all. Stumbled on the forum during a search for any vintage shaper videos. Honestly surprised I hadn't seen it or learned of it earlier.
66, high school shop classes, aviation maintenance in Jr. College, same in Army on the way to flight school. Maintenance (NOT experimental) test pilot. Always kept my hands busy in my personal time. Post retirement in VA where I had no real interest in being. Picked up a Logan 10" lathe, a Clausing 8511 mill (factory Bridgeport M Head), over time became aware of shapers. My first one is a British 5" Perfecto. Used it to make tee nuts mostly. Decided to get a Logan as it would match the lathe and why not? Found one last year after a move from VA to WA. Thought I had a worn screw nut, actually stumbled across a series of posts by the previous owner on the issue on the Hobby Machinist forum. . Wasn't concerned, figured it's life with a 60 year old machine. A knowledgeable member on the Hobby Machinist forum kindly pointed out it was more likely to be a friction issue and common enough he said he'd lost count of how many times the question had come up on various forums. Hallelujah, a minor end nuts adjustment and we have full feed. Still figuring out how to set the feed rate for repeatability. Slowly getting better at grinding tools, learning to work through the inevitable 2 or more tools or jigs to make prior to beginning work on the desired project. Like needing to fix post move grinder vibration so I can grind tools on the CBN wheel. Thanks in advance for being here!
