Introduction

Hi all, my name is Byrne, I work as a software developer in Singapore. I am interested in how to create a home kit/forge/setup for metal tinker work - specifically for creating simple mechanical toys. I have been googling but everything out there seems to be either factory made or heavy duty forge work. Was hoping that I can glean some education from this forum.

Welcome Byme. Cold forging is also effective, on a small scale.

Welcome to the forum, Byme.

Not sure what type of forge interests you. After study and trying a few styles at other shops. I'm assembling materials to build a side draft forge, probably with a Super Sucker style hood like this http://www.anvilfire.com/21centbs/planfile/ and with the balance lined with firebrick to not waste fuel heating an entire metal forge assembly every time it's used. Side draft seems to provide the most versatility for my plans, including fuel options & economy, operating range and fire access. A small gas forge is simple to do as well, be portable and only use very little space in your shop.

I'm also quite intrigued with the very basic foundry work done long ago in Benin (SW coat of Africa) that produced exquisite works of art and the crucible steel episode of the USA Public Broadcasting Network (PBS.org) show NOVA. Both are sources of good info that might be inspirational to your plans as well.
